DescriptionDC lighting set of 1928 by K. Ohler, internal combustion engine powered, generator, model no D21951, from Hockley House, Cheriton (still installed there). Country house lighting - By the 1920s, electric lighting was a mature technology. Everything needed for a safe and reliable home system could be bought 'off the shelf'. Yet for many people in the countryside this was frustrating, because they still had no mains supply. For those who could afford it, generators like this 1928 DC lighting set were a way to get around the problem. They were sometimes run during the day to charge batteries which could then be used for lighting the house at night because the engine was noisy
