Descriptionelectric motor by F.H. Royce & Co. Ltd, 200 volt, 2 BHP, circa 1900, cast metal frame, electromagnetic field coils. Nearly a Rolls-Royce? - Before he started making cars, Frederick Henry Royce made electrical machinery. As a young man he worked on street and theatre lighting. This was the height of modern technology, and electricity seemed like a growth industry from which to make good money. By 1884 he set up a workshop in Hulme, Manchester to make domestic electrical fittings. In 1894 his company started making dynamos and electric cranes and by 1899 expanded to the new industrial estate at Trafford Park in Manchester. This neat little motor shows the commitment to quality for which he was renowned. It also shows how, by modern standards, early motors contained serious electrocution and entrapment hazards! When competition from faster-growing larger electrical companies made sales increasingly difficult, Royce started to move into the car business from 1904 in partnership with Rolls: though the Royce company continued to make cranes until the 1960s
