DescriptionHighfield booster' electric motor generator by Thomas Parker Ltd, rotary convertor. Boosting output - This booster unit was probably used to reinforce a local DC electricity system at times of peak demand during the very early 20th century. DC current at low voltage was used a lot for domestic supply in those years, but it could not easily be transmitted more than a few miles from a central generating station. This meant that for fast-growing suburbs, electricity supplies could be a problem. Nobody wanted a new power station next to the garden they had bought to move out of a smoky city centre. This unit was probably supplied by its own dedicated AC line and could be used to inject extra power into a DC area for short periods when required, a system that later became known as a rotary converter. The maker's name of Thomas Parker suggests it was made by his workshops which later became the large Electric Construction Corporation. (with thanks to Grace's Guide)
